Francesco Cardinal Montenegro (born May 22, 1946 in Messina ) is an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Agrigento .

Life

Francesco Montenegro studied at the seminary of San Pio X in Messina and was ordained a priest on August 8, 1969 by the local archbishop Francesco Fasola . From 1971 to 1978 he was secretary to Ignazio Cannavò , who became the new Archbishop of Messina in 1977 . After he worked as parish priest until 1988, Montenegro became director of the diocesan Caritas. From 1997 to 2000 he was Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela.

On March 18, 2000 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Aurusuliana and auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. The episcopal ordination took place on April 29 of the same year in the Cathedral of Messina by Archbishop Giovanni Marra .

On February 23, 2008 Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Agrigento . The inauguration took place on May 17 of the same year.

In the Sicilian Episcopal Conference , Francesco Montenegro is the delegate for charitable affairs and health. He is a Grand Crusader of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and their prior in the province of Agrigento .

In the solemn consistory of February 14, 2015, Pope Francis created him cardinal and appointed him cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Andrea e Gregorio al Monte Celio .

On May 20, 2015, Cardinal Francesco Montenegro was elected Head of the Episcopal Commission for Welfare and Health by the General Assembly of Italian Bishops . The chairmanship of Caritas in Italy is also connected with this. He also heads the episcopal office for migration issues “Fondazione Migrantes”. His diocese includes the island of Lampedusa , which for years was a hotspot of flight and migration across the Mediterranean to Europe .
