Ignazio Cannavò [iɲˈɲattsjo kannaˈvɔ] (born December 12, 1921 in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia , Province of Catania , † October 18, 2015 in Acireale ) was Archbishop of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela .

Life

Ignazio Cannavò was ordained a priest on November 5, 1944 . In 1948 he received his doctorate in philosophy and in 1953 in theology. From 1948 to 1968 he taught philosophy at the Episcopal Seminary in Acireale.

On October 31, 1970 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Titular Bishop of Octava and Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Acireale . The Archbishop of Palermo , Francesco Cardinal Carpino , gave him episcopal ordination on December 13th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the former bishop of Noto , Angelo Calabretta , and his successor Salvatore Nicolosi .

On February 21, 1976 Ignazio Cannavò was by Paul VI. appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Messina and, on December 20th, Prelate of the Prelature of Santa Lucia del Mela. After he succeeded Francesco Fasola as Archbishop of Messina on June 3, 1977 and was solemnly inaugurated in his new office in the Cathedral of Messina , he was also appointed Bishop of Lipari on December 10 of the same year. Thus, the three jurisdictional areas Archdiocese of Messina, were diocese Lipari and Prelature Santa Lucia del Mela united already in the person of their professor before September 30 in 1986 by a decree of the Congregation for Bishops and territorial the Archdiocese Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela were summarized.

Until his successor Giovanni Marra took office in June 1997, Ignazio Cannavò continued to lead the Archdiocese as Apostolic Administrator . Cannavò died on October 19, 2015 and was buried in Messina on October 21 of the same year.
