Giovanni Marra (born February 5, 1931 in Cinquefrondi , Reggio Calabria Province , Italy ; † July 11, 2018 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela .

Life

Giovanni Marra was born on February 5, 1931 in Cinquefrondi, a small town in the province of Reggio Calabria . He was ordained a priest on September 19, 1953 . From 1960 to 1986 he worked in the Holy See , first in the Congregation for the Clergy , then in the State Secretariat and finally in the administration of property in the Apostolic See . On January 28, 1976, Pope Paul VI awarded him . the title of Honorary Prelate to His Holiness .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Usula and auxiliary bishop in Rome on June 7, 1986 . The episcopal ordination received his Ugo Cardinal Poletti on 28 June of the same year in the Lateran Basilica ; his slogan up to now was Pax et bonum .

On November 14, 1989, John Paul II appointed him Italian military bishop and made him titular archbishop of Rebellum . He resigned from this position in January 1996.

On May 17, 1997 Giovanni Marra was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. The inauguration took place on June 21 of the same year in the Cathedral of Messina . His resignation due to reasons of age accepted Pope Benedict XVI. on November 18, 2006. Until his successor Calogero La Piana took office in January 2007, Giovanni Marra headed the Archdiocese as Apostolic Administrator .

On January 3, 2007 Giovanni Marra was born by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed member of the Congregation for Bishops . From March 5, 2011 until the inauguration of the new bishop in June of the following year, he was Apostolic Administrator for the vacant Diocese of Orvieto-Todi .

Giovanni Marra was a member of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and since 1997 Prior of the Commandery in Messina.
