Crooked dogs is also the slang term, possibly derived from it, for culebras (Spanish, snakes), a type of cigar that originally came from Cuba. In addition to their unusual shape, they derive their particularity and desirability from the fact that they are exclusively handmade, namely by braiding three still moist cigars into a braid and then drying them. There is the following story about the origin of culebras: An old tradition allowed cigar makers to take three cigars home with them in the evening after work. So that the workers would certainly not sell these cigars on the market, they were devalued by braiding them and tying them at the ends.

A gantry crane on the Rhine-Herne Canal was also called a crooked dog .
