EC 50

In pharmacology and toxicology, the mean effective concentration ( EC 50 ) or mean effective dose ( ED 50 ) is the effective concentration or dose at which a half-maximum effect is observed. The mean effective dose cannot be measured directly, but has to be derived from a dose-effect curve determined on a group of individuals by mathematical modeling.

When determining toxicity , the EC 50 corresponds to a concentration that triggers a defined effect other than death in 50% of a test population - in the case of lethality one would speak of LC 50 .

In ecotoxicology, EbC 50 and ErC 50 refer to the reduction of biomass and the inhibition of the growth of plants or algae.

In pharmacology, the therapeutic range is calculated using the quotient of LD 50 and ED 50 .
