Louis Gathmann

Louis Gathmann (born August 11, 1843 - † June 3, 1917 ) was a German-American engineer and inventor . He began his career designing equipment for mills and farms and held numerous patents . In the 1880s, he started a company that produced his designs. This company, known as Garden City , manufactured machines for milling operations that were sold worldwide.

Life

Gathmann was born in the province of Hanover . He emigrated to the United States of America in 1864 and moved to Chicago in 1865 , where he lived until his death.

In the 1880s, Gathmann had enough money to bring his family from Prussia to America. He had four houses built, two in Chicago, one in Washington, DC, and one in Baltimore .

Gathmann was very interested in astronomy and had three observatories built in the Chicago area, one of them in a tower next to his house. In the 1890s, he invented multi-part lenses that he used for his telescopes .

Beginning in the 1890s, Gathmann invented numerous large artillery pieces , including a cannon. Another famous design was the Gathmann cannon , an 18-inch gun manufactured by Bethlehem Steel for coastal defense.

When Gathmann died in 1917, he held more patents than anyone else.
