Walter Proebst

Walter Proebst (* 1934 ; † July 24, 2017 in Adlkofen ) was a German motorcycle and car racing driver .

Origin and private life

Walter Proebst was already enthusiastic about racing as a teenager. His father was a college teacher and wanted his son to study. He first studied classical philology for five semesters, then dropped out and became a lubricants engineer . This enabled him to be close to racing. In the mid-sixties he took a job with a Munich lubricant company.

Walter Proebst was married three times. The first marriage failed while he was still studying. His second wife was named Irene. His third wife was Hilde Proebst, whom he married in 1982. He has three children. A son comes from the second marriage, who was born in 1965. 1985 daughter Verena was born.

In 2010, Hilde Proebst suddenly died at the age of 64. This was a deep turning point in his life. His health was going downhill. He's only spent the last two years in bed. He was 82 years old. He was buried on August 1st in the cemetery in Adlkofen.

Athletic career

Motorcycle racing

The Landshut native bought his first motorcycle at the age of 16. He started racing on the dirt track as well as the grass track. Walter Proebst was seriously injured at the age of 36. He broke his shoulder and broke his collarbone for the second time. At first he took part in so-called holiday races in France , Italy and Yugoslavia , through which he earned good money. Because of the serious injuries he finally stopped racing after 20 years.

In the 1960s, he switched to car racing for health reasons . He participated in hill climbs , touring cars , Gran Turismo (GT) and sports car races. As early as 1968 he drove his first hill climb in a BMW 1800 ti - without much success . As an unknown racing driver, however, he had to pay expensive entry fees to be allowed to start. He raced z. B. at the Nürburgring , where Niki Lauda and James Hunt also drove. The high point of his racing career was in the 1970s. His co-drivers included Holger Schechinger and Hans Deffland.

After his racing career, Walter Proebst organized together with Scuderia Isar e. V. Driving training. For example, up to 2004, ten training and test days (free driving) took place on the racetrack in Most / Czech Republic .

Adlkofen car museum

Look inside the museum

Together with his wife Hilde, he founded the “1. Lower Bavarian Automobile and Motorcycle Museum Adlkofen ”. In it he summarized his collection of vintage cars and motorcycles , which were distributed in different garages and barns. In 1985 a second hall was added. The carrier of the museum is the Scuderia Isar eV - Automuseum Adlkofen, which was Walter Proebst's first director for many years. The Scuderia Isar e. V., led by his daughter Verena, wants to keep his life's work and continue the museum. In July 2019 the "Alex von Falkenhausen Classics" took place for the 30th time.

He also founded the “Three Helmet Rally” in Lower Bavaria's largest and oldest rally (later renamed “ Alex von Falkenhausen Classics”). Just like the car museum, this event is also organized by Scuderia Isar e. V. organized.

Walter Proebst wrote an autobiographical novel entitled "Come Back". By June 22, 2011, he had written 560 typewriter pages.
