Ratisbona hill climb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ratisbona mountain races were a series of hill climbs for cars and motorcycles that were held from 1924 to 1981 near Kelheim in Lower Bavaria.

history

The first Ratisbona hill climb was held in 1924, the last before World War II in 1938. These races were organized by the Regensburg Motorsport Club, which is what gave the event its name - Ratisbona is a Latin name for the city of Regensburg .

In 1949 a race was held on the route from Kelheim up to the Liberation Hall. From 1961 to 1981 the Kelheim Motorsport Club organized the Ratisbona hill climb under the patronage of the ADAC every two years.

The most frequent route led from Kelheim to Ihrlerstein and was 3.7 kilometers long. Even today it is still referred to by the population as a "race track".

Around 25,000 spectators came to Kelheim for each of the races.

Attendees

The racing drivers who took part in the Ratisbona hill climb included well-known greats in motorsport such as Gerhard Mitter , Rudolf Caracciola , Hans Stuck , Bernd Rosemeyer , Sepp Greger and Toni Mang .

Deadly accidents

In 1977, when the race in Kelheim was the fifth round of the German Road Motorbike Championship , motorcyclists Fritz Reichert and Helmut Schilling had a fatal accident during training. In the last two races, 1979 and 1981, motorcycles were no longer permitted for safety reasons.
