Jörg Denzel (* 1941 ) is a former German automobile racing driver .

Career

Jörg Denzel started his racing career in touring car racing in the early 1970s . 1973 to 1976 and after a four-year break in 1981 he drove in the 2nd division of the German Racing Championship (DRM). There he drove BMW and Ford racing cars. He gained his first racing experience in the DRM with a BMW 1602 TI and BMW 2002 TI . At the end of the 1975 season he contested a few races in a Ford Escort RS 1600 . This year he achieved his best DRM season result with a 10th place. In the following year Denzel drove in the DRM exclusively with a BMW 2002. Despite several top ten placements, he was unable to build on the success of the previous year. In his last DRM race in 1981 he drove a BMW 320i . He finished the last race in this racing series in Zolder with an 8th place in the 2nd division.

From 1975 to 1981 he regularly took part in several endurance races in the European Touring Car Championship and the World Sports Car Championship . In the sports car world championship, he and his fellow drivers fielded various BMW racing cars. His first class victory and best result in the Manufacturers' Championship, he reached in 1976 together with Norbert Neumann at the 1000 km race at the Nurburgring on a BMW 2002 TII, which both ended with a 12th overall position and victory in Group 5 2.0.

In the European Touring Car Championship he mainly drove BMW, Ford and Mercedes racing cars. In 1977 he contested the 6-hour race at the Nürburgring in a VW Golf . He drove most of the Grand Prix races on the Nürburgring and in Brno. He celebrated his first overall victory together with Werner Schommers and Armin Hahne after the 1978 victory in a Ford Escort RS 2000 at the Grand Prix at the Nürburgring.

Denzel became better known in 1980 when he and Clemens Schickentanz won the 6-hour race at the Nürburgring in a Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC .

In 1982, the last year of his racing career, he started with a Ford Escort RS in two races of the 2nd division of the German Automobile Racing Trophy at the Hockenheimring , which he finished with second and third place. Then he retired from motorsport.
