Werner Schommers

Werner Schommers (born August 31, 1947 in Remscheid ) is a former German racing driver and today's entrepreneur.

Career

Werner Schommers started his racing career in 1969. He gained his first experience in touring car motorsport on a Lotus Elan and Alfa Romeo 1300 GTA Junior . As early as 1971, he celebrated his first overall victory with a Ford Escort TC in the German Automobile Circuit Championship race in Hockenheim.

In 1972 he drove as a works driver together with Dieter Kern for Renault in Formula 3, until Renault stopped its involvement in mid-1973.

From 1973 to 1976 Schommers competed in the German Racing Championship (DRM). At first he drove a Ford Escort RS 1600 in the 2nd division of the championship and in 1974 switched to a BMW 3.0 CSL with which he competed in the 1st division. His best result in the DRM was 9th places in 1975 and 1976. In both years he drove Ford racing cars, first a Ford Capri RS 3100 and the following year a Ford Escort RS 1600 .

With the BMW 3.0 CSL of the BMW-Faltz-Alpina-Tuning team and his driver colleague Ernst Kraus , he drove a full racing season in the 1974 European Touring Car Championship . In 1977 and 1978 he competed in several European championship races with a Ford Escort RS 2000. In his last big race in his racing career, the 4-hour race at the Nürburgring in 1978, he achieved overall victory together with Jörg Denzel and Armin Hahne .

In the German Automobile Circuit Cup he drove a few races from 1975 to 1977. Last year he won in Wunstorf and achieved a class win in the T2.0 class. In his career, Schommers only contested two long-distance races. The first race in 1976 was the Kyalami 1000 km race with Reinhold Joest and the second race was the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring in 1978 with Berthold Doll , both driven with a Ford Escort RS 2000. In the second race, he and the KWS Motorsport team achieved 35th place and 7th place in the ser.T-Class.

In 1978 he ended his motorsport career and entered the hotel and real estate business. Today he owns two hotels in the Westerwald and runs a real estate office in Spain.
