Peter "Handschuh" Peter (* 1943 in Vienna ) is an Austrian entrepreneur and former racing driver . He is the father of Philipp Peter .

Racing career

In the 1960s, Peter Peter was one of the young Austrian racing drivers who, as wild dogs, dominated the then new Formula Vee. This successful troop included Dieter Quester , Helmut Marko , Gerold Pankl , Günther Huber , Michael Walleczek and Lothar Schörg, among others . Later Erich Breinsberg , Harald Ertl and Niki Lauda also joined this racing series. Peter Peter drove the Kaimann racing car of the legendary Kurt "Masta" Bergmann , was twice European Vice Champion and competed several times in the Formula Vee match between the USA and Europe at the Daytona International Speedway .

In addition to Formula Vee racing , Peter competed in touring and sports car races . His greatest successes came in 1969 in the European Touring Car Championship . Together with Günther Huber, he finished the 6-hour race at Brands Hatch and the 6-hour race at the Nürburgring in a BMW 2002 ti in third place in the overall standings. Together with his partner Niki Lauda, he finished sixth overall in the 1970 1000 km race in Zeltweg in a Porsche 906 .

The death of Jochen Rindt during training for the Italian Grand Prix in 1970 meant that Peter Grund had to give up his racing career in the autumn of that year. Shocked by Rindt's accident and after a word of power from his father, he ended his driving career. His only serious accident was not during a race, but during a private training drive. With Michael Walleczek as co-driver, he explored the Nürburgring - Nordschleife in a Porsche 911 in the 1960s . In the Antoniusbuche section of the route, the Porsche got off the lane and, after rolling over several times, got stuck in bushes. What remained, in addition to a total write-off and a frightened passenger, was an irreparable hip and spine injury, which did not prevent him from racing.

Entrepreneur

Peter Peter is the offspring of a Viennese entrepreneurial family and, after his driving career, led the glove manufacturer Handschuhpeter, founded in 1838, in the fourth generation for decades . This family background led to his nickname Glove .

family

Peter Peter is married for the third time and has three children, two daughters and a son. Son Philipp became a professional racing driver. In contrast to his father, whose start in 1969 with Rudi Lins in the Porsche 910 did not materialize, Philipp Peter also drove successfully in Le Mans . In 2002 he finished third overall with Michael Krumm and Marco Werner in the factory Audi R8 .
