Silverstone 1000km race 1984
The 1984 Silverstone 1000 km race , also Grand Prix International 1000 kms, Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit , took place on May 13 at the Silverstone Circuit and was the second round of the World Sports Car Championship of that year.
The race
The overall victory of Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx in the plant - Porsche 956 came into being happy. Since the Porsche customer vehicles at Silverstone were given the same new aluminum bodies as the works cars and now also weighed 850 kilograms, the weight advantage of the works cars had disappeared. In the previous season , the 6-cylinder boxer engines had a compression ratio of 8.0: 1. In contrast, the customer teams drove with engines with a compression ratio of 8.5: 1 to use. With these measures, the customer 956 were on a par with the works cars.
After an initial lead by Riccardo Patrese, who was fastest in training, in the Lancia LC2 , Jonathan Palmer and Jan Lammers took the lead in the race. The clear victory over the works team was prevented by a blocked oil line, which forced the Porsche to come to the pits for repairs just before the end of the race. The team lost 20 minutes and overall victory to the factory cars from Mass and Ickx.
Great attention was paid to the launch of Richard Attwood , the Le Mans winner of 1970 . Attwood, who had not contested any races since 1971, drove the Nimrod NRA / C2B together with John Sheldon and Mike Salmon , which failed after 103 laps after an engine failure.
