Rondonacara hoehnei is a South American species of cichlid that is only known from a tributary of the Rio Araguaia in the Brazilian Cerrado . It is the only species in the genus Rondonacara .
features
Rondonacara hoehnei is 5.5 to 7.2 cm long and has the typical oval and laterally flattened body of cichlasomatine cichlids. The body height is 41.9 to 46.1% of the standard length . The fish are light brown with a darker back and a lighter belly side. A curved dark longitudinal stripe runs parallel to the dorsal profile from the rear edge of the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin. Rondonacara hoehnei also shows seven horizontal stripes on the sides of the body. Rondonacara u. Differs from all other genera of the Cichlasomatini . a. by transverse stripes at the beginnings of the dorsal fin rays, a single row of scales in front of the dorsal fin, an unscaled preoperculum and a spot on the center of the caudal fin base that is not designed as an eye spot . As a typical cichlasomatine cichlid, it has only four pores on the lower jaw bone (five in other cichlids with the exception of the heroini ) and only three hard rays in the anal fin (more in the heroini).
Rondonacara hoehnei forms a parent family and both parents take care of clutches and young fish.
Systematics
Rondonacara hoehnei was described in 1918 by the ichthyologist Alípio de Miranda-Ribeiro under the scientific name Nannacara hoehnei , but later assigned to the genus Aequidens . According to phylogenetic studies, the species is in a sister group relationship to the genus Laetacara and was therefore separated from Aequidens in 2015 and assigned to its own, monotypical genus. The genus was named in honor of Cândido Rondon , the leader of the Roosevelt-Rondon expedition, in the course of which the type specimens of the species were caught.
Danger
Due to the small distribution area and the extensive destruction of the natural environment there, Rondonacara hoehnei could be threatened with extinction.
