Hughes began his motorsport career in karting in 2010 , where he remained active until 2012. In 2012 he also made his debut in formula racing . For Antel Motorsport he took part in two races each of the BARC Formula Renault and its winter series. In addition, he drove two races in the V de V Challenge in amateur motorsport for Antel Motorsport . In 2013 Hughes moved to Lanan Racing in the newly founded BRDC Formula 4 Championship . He won four races and won the championship with 445 to 410 points ahead of Seb Morris .
In 2014 Hughes drove in several Formula Renault championships. For Mark Burdett Racing and the ART Junior Team , he took part in the Northern European Formula Renault . With a third place as the best result, he finished eighth in the drivers' championship. He also made guest starts for Mark Burdett Racing and Strakka Racing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and for Strakka Racing guest starts in the Alpine Formula Renault. In 2015 Hughes switched to Koiranen GP . He won one race in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and was sixth overall. In the Alpine Formula Renault, he finished the championship with four wins in second place. In both series his teammate Jack Aitken was champion.
In 2016 Hughes received a cockpit at DAMS in the GP3 series . He won two races and finished the season as the best DAMS driver in eighth place. In addition, Hughes took part for Carlin in the final race weekend of the 2016 European Formula 3 Championship . He achieved a third place. In 2017 Hughes switched to HitechGP , for which he continued to compete in the European Formula 3 championship.
