The Cross Bay ( Russian Залив Креста, Saliw Kresta ) is part of the Anadyr Gulf of the Bering Sea and is located in the south of the Chukchi Peninsula in Russia . Administratively it belongs to the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug .
history
The bay was discovered in 1648 during an expedition led by Semyon Deshnev . However , it was not mapped until 1665 by Kurbat Ivanov under the name Notschan . The bay got its current name in 1728 from Vitus Bering based on the feast of the Holy Cross .
nature
The bay is about 100 km long and up to 45 km wide. The width at the entrance is 25 km, the depth reaches up to 70 m. The tundra stretches around the steep banks , in the north there is also some mountain tundra .
On the east bank is the village of Konergino, on the west the village of Uelkal. To the north is the Egwekinot urban-type settlement . A few smaller rivers flow into the bay, the largest of which is called Tnekweem .
The species found include seals , walruses, and whales .
