Artyom Valeryevich Markelow ( Russian Артём Валерьевич Маркелов , also Artem Markelov transcribed; born September 10, 1994 in Moscow ) is a Russian racing driver . He finished second in the German Formula 3 Cup in 2013 . He has been competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship (formerly GP2 series) since 2014 .

Career

Markelow began his motorsport career in karting . In 2011 he made his debut in formula racing . For Motopark Academy he started in the ADAC Formula Masters . Markelow won a race and was on the podium 11 times. With 251 points, he was fourth overall. Within the team he was beaten by Emil Bernstorff , who finished second with 310 points. He also made a guest start in the Formula 3 Euro Series for the racing team .

In 2012 Markelow received a cockpit at Motopark Academy in the German Formula 3 Cup . The racing team competed under the name Lotus . Markelow won two races and achieved another podium finish. He was in seventh place overall, while two of his teammates, Jimmy Eriksson and Kimiya Satō occupied positions one and three. In 2013 Markelow stayed with the Lotus team from Motopark Academy in the German Formula 3 Cup. With two wins and a total of 21 podium finishes, he finished the season in second place overall. With 339 to 511 points, he lost to his teammate Marvin Kirchhöfer .

In 2014 Markelow switched to the GP2 series and received a cockpit at the RT Russian Time racing team, which is managed by iSport International . While his teammate Mitch Evans was fourth with 174 points, Markelow reached 24th overall with six points. In early 2015 , Markelow competed for Giles Motorsport in the Toyota Racing Series . With two second places as the best results, he finished eighth in the drivers' championship. Markelow then contested his second GP2 season for Russian Time . This year Virtuosi Racing UK took over the implementation of the races . With a third place as the best result, he improved to 13th place overall.

At the beginning of 2016 , Markelow competed again in the Toyota Racing Series for M2 Competition . He was on the podium five times and finished the season in eighth place overall. Markelow then went on to another season in the GP2 series for Russian Time. He achieved his first GP2 victory at the main race in Monaco . Markelow benefited from a late pit stop and two virtual safety car phases (VSC). He reached tenth place in the drivers' championship. Against his teammate Raffaele Marciello he lost with 97 to 159 points. In 2017 , Markelow stayed with Russian Time in the GP2 series, which had been renamed the FIA Formula 2 Championship during the winter break . He won 5 races and finished the championship in 2nd place. He also competed in Formula 2 for Russian Time in 2018 . He won 3 races and finished the season in fifth place overall.

In 2019 he drove in two races for the MP Motorsport team.
