Previous model Jaguar X350

The Jaguar X351 is a luxury sedan of the XJ series of the British car manufacturer Jaguar Cars . The official world premiere was on July 9, 2009 at the Saatchi Gallery in London . However, the vehicle was previously shown at Auto Shanghai in April 2009. On July 5, 2019, production of the sedan initially ended without replacement. The successor model is to be powered by batteries. The designer of the vehicle was Ian Callum .

history

With the new Jaguar of the XJ series , a completely new car was launched on the market in early 2010. While the external shape has changed little in the last series, this is not the case with the X351. The XJ has changed fundamentally and looks more massive than its predecessor. The new radiator grille, on which the company logo is located, also contributes to this. Overall, the design of the X351 is based on that of the XF . The base price is now 79,750 euros. The main competitors of the Jaguar XJ are the Mercedes-Benz S-Class , the VW Phaeton , the BMW 7 Series , the Audi A8 and the Lexus LS . In 2012, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, 427 Jaguar XJs were newly registered in Germany, 369 of them from commercial owners.

technology

drive

Three different engines are available for the X351, the power of which is transmitted via an 8-speed automatic transmission. With the exception of the two XJR variants, the maximum speed for each engine is limited to 250 km / h.

The transmission is the so-called Jaguar Sequential Shift , an 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF . In positions D and S (for sport), the throttle position , the triggering threshold for Dynamic Stability Control and the switching times are adapted to the driving style. The drive programs can be selected using a rotary switch on the center console , the JaguarDrive Selector . If necessary, the speed levels can also be changed using paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Furnishing

Jaguar offers many features on the X351. Some of these are standard equipment, others are available on request and subject to a surcharge. As with the predecessor, a long wheelbase is available: 3157 mm instead of 3032 mm.

  • The Jaguar Smart Key System keyless entry system enables the vehicle to be unlocked and started without operating the key
  • 2-zone and 4-zone automatic air conditioning
  • The Jaguar iTech system is an infotainment system with two screens and voice control.
  • Some systems to improve driving dynamics such as the Jaguar Sequential Shift 6-speed automatic transmission .

The X351 is available in four design lines, which differ in terms of standard equipment and engine. The basic equipment "Luxury" is only available with the 3-liter diesel engine, which is also available for the three other equipment lines. The “Premium Luxury” and “Portfolio” equipment options are also available with a 5-liter V8 petrol engine; instead, a supercharged V8 engine is available for the “Supersport” line.

Infotainment system

Infotainment system

The infotainment system, referred to by Jaguar as the iTech system , consists of two screens with voice and steering wheel control. The system can be operated from the steering wheel using two thumb-operated switches on the left and right side of the steering wheel hub as well as two five-way touchpads on the steering wheel spokes. Voice control can be used to control the navigation system and the touchscreen display and to make phone calls.

The first screen is placed behind the steering wheel and displays virtual instruments that replace the conventional instrument cluster . If necessary, individual instruments are hidden and messages (e.g. from the navigation system) or selection menus (e.g. for radio stations) are displayed. The second screen is a touchscreen in the center console, which is used to operate the multimedia system , navigation system, telephone and air conditioning. A so-called dual view mode enables the driver and front passenger to view different content on the same screen and listen to different audio channels via wireless headphones .

The satellite navigation system uses a hard drive for storage and automatically displays nearby petrol stations when the fuel level is low.

The multimedia system has a CD drive and a 30 GB hard drive. CDs and data for the navigation system can be stored on the hard drive. Media storage devices can be connected via USB, Bluetooth and a 3.5 mm jack plug . Two stereo speaker systems (400 W or 600 W) and a 1200 W surround sound system from Bowers & Wilkins are available. A TV receiver for analog and digital television is also available. There are two 8-inch LCD screens and a USB interface in the rear .

safety

The body of the XJ is made of aluminum and magnesium . Components made of extruded , stamped and cast aluminum are assembled with rivets , epoxy gluing and partial screwing to form a stable monocoque construction. The rigidity achieved in this way means that less energy has to be absorbed in the event of a collision, and the body becomes more stable. Nevertheless, the vehicle is currently the lightest in its class.

The front seats have a whiplash reduction system that provides head support by moving the headrests forward in the event of an impact. The active seat belt system reacts to hard cornering or strong braking. Electric motors pull the front seat belts tighter and tighter, pushing the occupants into the backrests. The tension in the belts is reduced again when the road becomes straighter or the journey becomes more relaxed.

The bonnet has an automatically controlled, energy-absorbing function. In the event of a collision with a pedestrian in the front area of the vehicle, the bonnet is raised slightly.

The adaptive cruise control (ACC) uses a microwave radar hidden behind the front bumper , which observes the traffic and warns of possible dangers and maintains the distance to the vehicle in front. The emergency brake assistant calculates the distance and the approach speed to the vehicle in front. In addition, the brakes are pre-activated in order to reduce the impact speed if a collision appears inevitable.

The optionally available "Blind Spot" warning system uses radar sensors to warn of overtaking vehicles in the blind spot by means of a yellow warning symbol in the exterior mirrors . A tire pressure monitoring system is also available on request.

To protect against theft, the X351 has a perimetric anti- theft alarm system with automatic door locking when driving off.

Special vehicles

British Prime Minister David Cameron chose the Jaguar XJ as his official vehicle. It is the Jaguar XJ Sentinel. Jaguar presented the special protection vehicle with the highest level of protection B7 at the Moscow Motor Show in August 2010. The armor is designed to withstand 15 kilograms of TNT bombs. Certification (quality assessment) was carried out by the independent organization QinetiQ . The appearance of the Jaguar XJ Sentinel hardly differs from the normal version. Due to the armor, the automobile weighs 3.3 tons. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.7 seconds. The maximum speed is 250 km / h. The car was delivered in February 2011 at a price of £ 200,000 or € 232,000 (March 2011 exchange rate). His successor Theresa May also uses this vehicle today.

The Jaguar authorized coachbuilder Wilcox Limousines, based in Chalfont St Peter ( Buckinghamshire ) in England, makes an extended version of the XJ. The vehicle has three rows of seats and two additional doors. The company was founded in 1934 and has been working with Jaguar Cars since 1969.
