The Jaguar S-Type is an upper middle class sedan series from the British manufacturer Jaguar . It was introduced at the beginning of 1999 and is stylistically reminiscent of Jaguar sedans from the 1960s, especially the series of the same name built from 1963 to 1968 .
History and technology
The S-Type was conceived during Jaguar's affiliation with the Ford Motor Company . Since 1998, the company has been part of the Premier Automotive Group (PAG), which specializes in premium and luxury automobiles. With the S-Type, Jaguar moved back into the upper middle class segment after a long time, although it was the entry-level model at the time. The visual proximity to the Jaguar Mark 2 was consciously used when the vehicle was initially advertised. The ancestor of the S-Type was the inspiration for the design of the radiator grille and round headlights. The S-Type was only available as a four-door sedan . In production, the automobile model shared the platform with the Lincoln LS . The space on the back seat was considered cramped on the Jaguar. The vehicle had an on-board computer and ESP was available as an option. The suspension with double wishbone front axle had two subframe .
Facelift
A basic facelift took place in April 2002. The interior, especially the dashboard, was redesigned or of higher quality. The technology of the S-Type was also improved in some points at this point. For example, a 6-speed automatic transmission from the German manufacturer ZF has been used since then. In addition, the top model S-Type R with supercharging was introduced for the first time . The V8 was simultaneously increased from four to 4.2 liters displacement. The 2.5 liter V6, also borrowed from the X-Type in 2002, was withdrawn from the range after just over three years. In June 2004 the S-Type was slightly revised again. For example, the rear got a slightly different shape and new taillights. In addition, the 2.7 liter diesel engine was introduced. Since then, the hood has been made of aluminum instead of steel as before. Production of the S-Type ended in autumn 2007. The successor was the Jaguar XF in spring 2008 . In 2008 Jaguar was sold to the Indian Tata Motors .
