Need for Speed: Brennender Asphalt ( English original title: Need for Speed: High Stakes , in Europe: Need for Speed: Road Challenge ) is the fourth part of the computer racing game series Need for Speed published by Electronic Arts . The first release took place on March 18, 1999 for the PlayStation . The Windows version was first published on June 20, 1999 . The game was developed by EA Canada .
Gameplay
This part has some innovations compared to its predecessors. For the first time there is a damage model and the racing drivers are now located and tracked not only by police cars but also by their helicopters. However, these can only find the player on the open road and not in tunnels. In the PlayStation version, the player has the option of controlling this helicopter himself by entering a cheat . There is also a career mode for the first time in this part of the series.

technology
This was the first time that images were used for the interior of the cars. Instead, like the rest of the car, the interior was modeled three-dimensionally.
Windows Vista compatibility
An installation under Windows Vista or newer is possible without problems. However, starting is not possible. The so-called NFS HS Stock Pack , developed by the community, provides a remedy, which guarantees compatibility with newer Windows versions and offers additional features. The expansion offers additional cars and tracks.
