Zoo Tycoon is an economic simulation by the computer game developer Blue Fang Games , which was published by Microsoft in 2001 for the PC .
Gameplay
The aim of the game is to generate as much profit as possible with a self-built zoo or to make the zoo as popular as possible. To do this, paths, enclosures and various other facilities have to be built and kept clean for visitors, animals have to be bought and staff, e.g. animal keepers, have to be hired.
Depending on how much effort the player puts in building the zoo and the enclosures and whether enough care and maintenance staff is employed, the satisfaction value of the visitors and the animals increases or decreases , with dissatisfied animals in turn having a negative effect on the satisfaction of the visitors . There are also awards for high visitor satisfaction and good enclosure design (e.g. zoo of the year or highest visitor satisfaction - blue ribbon ).
A large number of objects are available for the construction of the park, almost all of which exist in several versions. The palette ranges from dirt roads and paved paths to small and large fences to various snack stands , toilets and flower pots . For the enclosures there are different types of soil such as sand, grass, earth or stone, a large number of trees from every place on earth and just as many animals, both more well-known such as elephants , giraffes and lions as well as some less known species.
With the two extensions Dinosaur Digs , Marine Mania or the game collection ZT Complete Collection , dinosaurs , fish , marine mammals and various other new animal species with corresponding objects such as larger (energized) fences and aquariums are added. At Marine Mania , demonstrations with the animals can also be shown. You can also download the official bonus objects and animals from Microsoft and the various fan pages, such as B. Asian elephant, sable antelope, puma and llama.
The game is shown in 2D graphics, 3D elements do not exist.

The sequel Zoo Tycoon 2 , again developed by Blue Fang Games, was released in November 2004 by Microsoft Game Studios . A German version was published by Microsoft Deutschland GmbH; NBG EDV Handels- und Verlags GmbH & Co. KG took over the distribution.
The graphics have been improved compared to the predecessor and replaced by a 3D view, but the gameplay remained largely the same. However, the specific behavior of the animals has been made more complex and allows greater interaction with the animals.
