Istmina is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Chocó in Colombia .

geography

Istmina is located in the south of Chocó in the San Juan sub-region , about 64 km from Quibdó on the Río San Juan . The municipality is bordered by El Cantón de San Pablo , Unión Panamericana and Tadó in the north, Río Iró , Medio San Juan and Sipí in the east, Litoral de San Juan in the south and Bajo Baudó and Medio Baudó in the west .

The municipality of Istmina has 25,981 inhabitants, of which 20,738 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019). Istmina and Tadó are the seat of the Istmina-Tadó diocese .

history

The name Istmina is composed of Istmo (Spanish for isthmus ) and Mina (Spanish for mine ), two of the characteristics of the region. In 1874, María Rosalia Urrutia, of Spanish descent, received sovereignty over the land on the left bank of the Río San Juan (today's district of Cubis ) from the Spanish crown . She gave the settlement the name of Minas de San Juan Evangelista and built a mining -Siedlung with over 200 from Africa originating slaves for gold recovery . As a result, traders also settled on the opposite bank of the river. This place was first known as Boca de San Pablo . The first administrative structures were created in 1836.
