Medio Atrato is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Chocó in Colombia . The main town (cabecera municipal) of Medio Atrato is Beté . The cultural landscape of the folk architecture of the stilt buildings by Medio Atrato is on the tentative list , which includes sites that are intended for nomination for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List in Colombia .

geography

Medio Atrato is located on the Río Atrato in the east and center of Chocó at an altitude of 50  m above sea level. NN , 45 minutes by boat from Quibdó . The municipality is largely enclosed by Quibdó and is also bordered in the northeast by Urrao and Vigía del Fuerte in the Department of Antioquia .

The municipality of Medio Atrato has 33,542 inhabitants, of which 1259 live in Beté (as of 2019).

history

Medio Atrato was founded as a municipality in 1999 because the region had suffered from the absence of state institutions. However, the area has been inhabited by Afro-Colombian and indigenous communities for a long time.

economy

Medio Atrato's economy is largely informal in nature. There are agriculture , fisheries , timber industry and mining operation.

traffic

There is no road or air connection to Medio Atrato. The only paths and streets within the community were laid out by the residents themselves. The main way to get to the community is by boat across the Río Atrato .
