The Río San Juan is an approximately 400 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in western Colombia .

River course

The Río San Juan rises in the Western Cordillera at an altitude of about 2200  m . The headwaters are in the extreme north of the Risaralda Department . The Río San Juan initially flows 80 km in a westerly direction through the mountains. Finally he reaches the coastal plain. It passes the small town of Tadó at river kilometer 290 and then turns south-southwest. At river kilometer 270, near the city of Istmina , the highway I-13 crosses the river. At rivers 248 and 208, the rivers Río Tamaná and Río Sipí flow into the Río San Juan from the left. 90 km above the mouth, the Río San Juan turns west. 65 km above the mouth, the Río Calima meets the Río San Juan when coming from the south. This runs north of the Bahía Málaga bay , which is located in the Parque Nacional Natural Uramba Bahía Málaga . At river kilometer 40, the Río San Juan branches into several estuary arms. The river delta extends over an area of about 300 km². The middle and lower reaches of the Río San Juan lie in the Departamento del Chocó . For the last 60 kilometers, the river forms the border with the Departamento del Valle del Cauca to the south .

Hydrology

The Río San Juan drains an area of 16,465 km². The mean discharge is 2550 m³ / s. This makes it the most water-rich river on the Colombian west coast. The annual sediment load is 16 million tons. The catchment area of the Río San Juan lies in the humid tropical zone. This is characterized by tropical rainforest . The temperatures are relatively constant over the year. Furthermore, the climate is characterized by heavy rainfall and high humidity. The months of September to November usually see the highest rainfall on the Colombian west coast. In addition, there is a less pronounced rainy season between April and June. The mean monthly discharge of the Río San Juan (see diagram) is shown accordingly.
