The Río Calima is an approximately 150 km long left tributary of the Río San Juan in the department of Valle del Cauca in western Colombia .
River course
The Río Calima has its source in the Western Cordillera . The headwaters, which are around 3400 m high, are located on the southeast flank of the 3840 m high Cerro Calima . The Río Calima initially flows 30 km in a predominantly south-easterly direction through the mountain ridge. He reaches a basin landscape and turns south. Around river kilometer 121 it reaches the northeastern end of the Calima reservoir. The Río Calima is dammed over a length of 13 km. Below the dam, the Río Calima cuts through the mountains on a 35 km long section in a west-northwest direction. The river reaches the western Colombian coastal lowlands, which it then flows through for a distance of 50 km in a westerly direction. For the last 25 km, the Río Calima turns to the northwest before it meets the Río San Juan, which flows in a westerly direction, and flows into it.
Catchment area
The Río Calima drains an area of approximately 1300 km². In the south the catchment area borders on that of the Río Dagua , in the north on that of the Río Munguidó , another tributary of the Río San Juan.
Use of hydropower
About 110 km above the estuary, the Calima dam ( ⊙ ) was built on the Río Calima in the years 1961–1966 . The 20 km² reservoir is located at an altitude of 1442 m . In addition to generating energy, it also serves as a recreational goal.
