Friedrich Wilhelm Andreas Schwinge (born March 30, 1852 in Hamburg ; † October 22, 1913 there ) was a German landscape and marine painter from the Düsseldorf School of Painting .

Life

Friedrich Schwinge was born as the son of the greengrocer Hermann Diedrich (also Diederich ) Schwinge and his wife Caroline Maria Dorothea, née Hansen, in Hamburg. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Ottensen to a thatched farmhouse on the corner of Papenstrasse (now part of Ottensener Hauptstrasse ) and Rothestrasse . After attending school in Ottensen, out of love for art, he completed an apprenticeship as a wood cutter .

By chance and for lack of suitable work, he first became a tenor on small stages until he worked as an operetta tenor and actor at the Mädicke Theater in Kiel . Every free time he practiced painting and drawing and from 1877 copied paintings in the old Kiel art gallery , including a market square in Italy by Albert Flamm , a moonlight picture by Sophus Jacobsen , an idyll from England by Max Schmidt and the forge in winter by Hermann Kauffmann . For an art lover he copied The Guidance of Empress Eudoxia and her children ( Eudocia and Placidia ) by the Vandal King Geiserich by Gustav Spangenberg . Because of his good performance, he was awarded the Hegewischianum Scholarship for 1879. He also made a portrait of the art collector and founder of the Thaulow Museum in Kiel, Gustav Ferdinand Thaulow , which was well received. During this time the poet Johann Meyer was a friend, supporter and advisor to him.

From 1879 to 1884 Schwinge studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Johann Peter Theodor Janssen , Eugen Dücker , Hugo Crola and Heinrich Lauenstein . He received a scholarship from the academy for study purposes, which he used diligently. In 1882 the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association bought its oil painting Im Kiefernwald for the raffle of works by Schleswig-Holstein artists at the exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Schleswig-Holstein artists in the old Kiel art hall .

Schwinge settled in Hamburg in mid-1884. On June 2, 1886, he married the widowed Fernanda Georgine Wilhelmine Brügmann, née Durchbach (born November 14, 1852 in Hamburg) in Ottensen, who brought her son Edgar Brügmann into the marriage. He died on October 6, 1898 at the age of 23 years and 9 months. From 1884 to 1885 Friedrich Schwinge lived on Neuer Wall 46 in Hamburg-Neustadt , from 1885 to 1893 at Dammtorstraße 6 in Hamburg-Neustadt, from 1893 to 1898 on Alster 29 in Hamburg-St. Georg and from 1898 to 1901 at Hartungstrasse 1 in Hamburg-Rotherbaum . The Hülfs-Comité Neustadt-Nordertheil V. District , which was created because of the cholera epidemic in 1892 , raffled a gouache of the Hamburg harbor that Friedrich Schwinge had painted and donated to the committee. In October 1894 in the Hamburg Convent Garden and January 1895 in the Berlin Passage-Panoptikum , so-called "wandering light pictures" by H. Heitmann von Heitmann & Sohn were shown, which were 8 cm high and painted on glass by Friedrich Schwinge. They were projected onto a 6 m² screen by means of hydrogen light . The motifs of Schwinge's photographs ranged from a river landscape near Dordrecht to a section of the Elbe near Hamburg, Hamburg motifs, North Sea motifs , various fjords and local forest motifs. For the vegetation hall of the International Horticultural Exhibition in 1897 ( Planten un Blomen ) in Hamburg he created a vegetation gallery consisting of ten dioramas with natural foregrounds and painted backgrounds. He was supported by the painter Robert Gleich (1859–1912), the sculptor Max Meißner (1859–1942) and his pupil Ellenberg. The idea for the vegetation gallery came from the engineer Carl Georg Rodeck (1876–1935). In addition to depictions of a German heather landscape, a Mexican plateau, a New Zealand fern landscape , an alpine dump, a jungle, a park and a Japanese landscape, there was also a representation of a garden by the Erfurt horticultural company J. C Schmidt , the flowers, blossoms and trees for the Diorama delivered. The dioramas were awarded a large gold medal at the exhibition .

In 1886 the Kunstverein in Hamburg bought the watercolor Von der Elbe for Schwinge's annual club raffle , which the lawyer and later mayor Werner von Melle won. For the exhibition lottery of the Great Art Exhibition of 1894 of the Kunstverein in the Hamburger Kunsthalle , Schwinge bought the watercolor at Dordrecht at the exhibition . At the Great Art Exhibition in 1896, the von Schwinge Art Association bought the painting Cows in the Heath for the exhibition lottery. From 1896 Schwinge was listed in the membership list of the Kunstverein as a member with a family membership card, from 1902 without a family membership card, but his wife Fernanda Schwinge joined the Kunstverein. On April 12, 1897, Friedrich Schwinge was elected to the committee of the association, which was responsible for the period from 1894 to 1898, to replace the late pastor Georg Heinrich Röpe . The committee formed the permanent representation of the association members. From 1898, Schwinge was a member of the association's board of directors and thus also of the committee. In that year, the association bought the gouache In Blooming Heath from him for the association raffle , which the mayor Johann Georg Mönckeberg won. In 1899, the Schwinge Association bought the gouache Im Haferfeld for the raffle, in which he himself won the watercolor The City of Cromer on the English coast by the Glasgow painter John Terris (1865–1914). In that year he was also a member of the exhibition commission of the permanent exhibition, which was still in rooms under the stock exchange arcades of the Chamber of Commerce on Adolphsplatz , but a year later on Neuer Wall 14. 1900 the association bought Schwinge's painting Trüber Tag in der Heide for the raffle that the Senator Otto Eduard Westphal won, in 1901 the gouache An Obstacle won by the merchant Adolph Vorwerk (1839–1919, son of the merchant Georg Friedrich Vorwerk ) and in 1902 the painting Kuhgespann . In the raffle of 1903 he won a carbon print of a work by the baroque painter Guido Reni with the title Ecce homo ! . In 1904 Friedrich Schwinge resigned from the board of directors in accordance with the statutes, but still sat on the committee like all former members of the board.

Fernanda Schwinge, with whom he had their son Kurt, who later became an amateur filmmaker, was no longer on the membership list of the Kunstverein from 1904 onwards. On May 1, 1904, the divorce of Friedrich and Fernanda Schwinge, which was negotiated on March 11, 1904 at the Hamburg Regional Court , became final. On August 5, Friedrich Schwinge officially married Martha Christine Margarethe Hüttmann (born April 14, 1878 in Hamburg), the daughter of a Hamburg coal merchant, who was 25 years his junior in Hamburg.

For the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 , Friedrich Schwinge created a number of watercolors in 1899 (watercolors heightened with gouache) at the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg. 14 watercolors and additional photos by Georg Koppmann were used at the exhibition to understand the formation of the terrain and the landscaping for a relief plan of the cemetery, which was produced under the direction of Wilhelm Cordes and as part of the collective exhibition there of the Association of German Garden Artists from the Hamburg Cemetery Deputation in the palace de l ' Horticulture was issued. The cemetery was awarded a Grand Prix for this presentation at the World Exhibition . The Japanese government was interested in the exhibits and offered items of Japanese origin for exchange. The director of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg and member of the jury for the world exhibition, Justus Brinckmann , conducted the negotiation. Since the Hamburg cemetery deputation wanted to part with the relief plan and the photos, but not from the watercolors, there was no exchange. Instead, the relief plan, the watercolors and the photos were taken from the German city exhibition in Dresden in 1903 , from the exhibition of the Association of German Cemetery Officials in Berlin in 1907, from the Hygiene Exhibition in Berlin in 1907 , from the General Urban Development Exhibition in Berlin in 1911 exhibited again at the International Hygiene Exhibition in Dresden and in 1912 in Antwerp .

On November 28, 1900 rocker gave the Galerie Heinemann in Munich two paintings moon and forest stream in Commission . On November 12, 1901, she bought the paintings On the Swedish Coast (also Swedish Coast ) and Norwegian Coast from him . The latter was sold on December 22, 1901 to the Duchess Marie of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . On December 2, 1901, he commissioned the gallery with two paintings of the Norwegian coast. On December 28, 1905, he sold her the paintings Early Spring and In the Month of March .

From 1901 to 1903 Schwinge lived at Innocentiastraße 28 in Hamburg-Harvestehude and from 1903 to 1906 at Grindelallee 13 in Harvestehude. For the Hamburg town hall he created landscape paintings of the Hamburg forest villages . For the twin screw steamer Germany , which was completed at the beginning of January 1900, on behalf of HAPAG he painted landscape pictures with animals in the style of the Delft School as panels for the wall paneling of the grill room . In 1905 he painted the palace gardens of Schwerin Palace with the grand ducal palace in the background for the dining room of the twin screw steamer Crown Princess Cecilie, which was completed in 1907, on behalf of Norddeutsche Lloyd . In December 1905 the painting was exhibited in the shop window of the Heymannhaus at Neuen Wall 42 in Hamburg. For the twin screw steamer König Friedrich August , completed in 1906 , he also created murals on behalf of HAPAG . In 1906 Schwinge moved to Werderstrasse 30 in Harvestehude, where he lived until his death. The Schwinges had a single maid as a maid . Friedrich Schwinge also gave lessons over the years. Among his students, mainly female students, were Clarita Beyer , Helene Lübbers-Wegemann (1875-1958), Emmi Walther , Mary Warburg , Geo Wolters , the painter, writer and journalist of the Altonaer Nachrichten Gustav Proppe (* 1870) and Agnes von Holten (1868–1949), who married her future teacher Karl Otto Matthaei in 1905. In her memoirs she wrote:

“Soon after leaving school I started copying in the Kunsthalle in Hamburg and then took lessons from Friedrich Schwinge, who had a large number of students. He mainly painted watercolors and gouaches and looked for his motifs in the heather near Hamburg. In the spring, a small study trip was made in the Hamburg area, and it was very funny in the evenings, as there were lots of young people, often twenty schoolgirls, living together at the time. "

One place where Schwinge and his students held a colony every summer was Köster's Tivoli in Cranz on the Elbe, which Hermann Köster and his wife Irene, née Fock, maintained. In one of the guest rooms there were two paintings that Schwinge had painted, two portraits of old great-grandfather Köster and an old woman who once worked at Tivoli.

In 1903, 1905 and 1909 Schwinge donated works for the tombola of the artist and press ball in the Sagebielschen establishment at the Große Drehbahn and was involved in the decoration in 1911 and 1912 with the painters Paul Storm and Eduard Sack (1857–1913) of the ballrooms for the artist and press ball .

For the club raffle of the art association of rocker 1907 bought the oil painting April landscape and two photogravures entitled Heide solitude , 1908 tempera paintings April landscape , the wife of the city council George Henry Lütgens won, and in 1909 the watercolor Waldinneres . In September and October 1910, Schwinge exhibited a chromoplastic representation of a heath village in the Kunstverein , which still exists today. In March 1911, he presented the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg two Chromoplastische representations of the Alster and the Elbhohe on which the Bismarck Memorial stands, from which he for the International Exhibition of Travel and Tourism in the exhibition halls at Berlin Zoo draws and were issued there by the building deputation Hamburg . For the 1911 Children's Aid Day on May 24, 1911, he designed at least one postcard motif. He also signed 200 of the cards for a good cause. From February 1913 he painted around nine pictures on behalf of HAPAG to decorate the dining room of the passenger steamer Imperator , which at the time was considered the largest ship in the world and which left on June 11 for its maiden voyage . Schwinge's name and works now appeared more and more frequently in auction catalogs, for example in April 1912 at the estate auction of the sculptor Reinhold Begas , who owned two spring paintings by Schwinge.

From August 14, 1913, it became known through newspapers that around 15 to 20 paintings, including six landscapes by Friedrich Schwinge, had been stolen from the Hamburg art salon Alsterthor at Hermannstrasse 5 in Hamburg-Altstadt . On August 15, the owner of the Alsterthor O. Krone art salon was on his way to the town hall to provide more information about Schwinge's paintings. In front of the art dealer Louis Bock & Sohn , Große Bleichen 34, he met his former house servant Georg Franck, who had a large package with him and was now trying to flee. But Krone held him tight until a policeman came and took him into custody. The package contained three paintings, while Georg Franck admitted that he had already sold two paintings by Schwinge. He refused to say anything about the whereabouts of Schwinge's missing paintings. It turned out that Franck was also the unknown thief the police had been looking for weeks because he had committed various thefts of Schwinge's paintings. Krone had already offered a reward of 100 marks for catching the thief.

Friedrich Schwinge died of a myocardial infarction on October 22, 1913 in his apartment at the age of 61 . In the evening, a family service was held there. On October 23, the funeral service took place in Chapel 8 of the Ohlsdorf cemetery . This was followed by the burial, grave site AC6 (29-36) . Family members, artists, members of the Schlaraffia Harmonia , members of the Otto Ernst table , secretary of the Hamburger Kunsthalle AWF Müller, Hofrat Theodor Brodersen as a representative of the Kunstverein in Hamburg and the singer Annie Bookholtz, who wrote the songs Be quiet to the Lord, came to the funeral service and burial from Elias by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and When I should once should part from O head full of blood and wounds by Paul Gerhardt sang, accompanied by an organ. In addition, a funeral speech was given by theater director Lothar Mayring , who had leased the Ernst Drucker Theater from Ernst Drucker between 1908 and 1915 . The painter and sculptor Karl Spethmann (1888–1944) created a group of shepherds that was to be set up at the grave, but was then bought by the city of Altona for the Altona horticultural exhibition in 1914 and set up in the Altona city park (now the rose garden ). From November 1, 1913 , a commemorative exhibition took place in the art dealer Louis Bock & Sohn , Große Bleichen 34, in which 84 works from Schwinge's estate were exhibited, all of which were also for sale.

In addition to being a member of the Kunstverein in Hamburg , Schwinge was also a member of the Hamburger Künstlerverein , a member of the General German Art Cooperative , a corresponding member of the Watercolorist Club of the Cooperative of Visual Artists Vienna . and member of Schlaraffia Harmonia , a registered Hamburg association that still exists today. In Schlaraffia he had the rank of knight . Based on his professional activity, he used the name Ritter Rembrandt there .

On April 3, 1927, three days after Friedrich Schwinge's 75th birthday, members of the Schlaraffia Harmonia and friends and admirers of Schwinge met in Chapel 8 of the Ohlsdorf cemetery to go to Schwinge's grave. After members of the Schlaraffia Harmonia there sang the song Himmelsruh und Frieden gib den Eternlich von Hellwig, the chief laraffe and architect Ernst Vicenz gave a speech that the sick Wilhelm Weygandt originally wanted to give. After the speech, a rectangular bronze plate with a portrait relief of Schwinges in profile was unveiled, which was created by the sculptor Emmerich Oehler (1881–19 ??) and donated by Schlaraffia Harmonia . The plate was on a high boulder of granite mounted, which was surrounded by a plurality of small boulders. One boulder had the full name incorporated into it, "Friedrich Wilhelm Andreas Schwinge". The plate was signed “E. Oehler 1927 ". Above the portrait sat an eagle owl , a Schlaraffischen symbol for wisdom, humor and virtue, on a banner that carried the Latin motto of Schlaraffia: "In arte voluptas", which translates as "There is pleasure in art". Under the portrait the plate bore the inscription "The Schlaraffia Harmonia their dear unforgettable knight Rembrandt". After words of thanks from Friedrich Schwinge's son Kurt Schwinge and the hymn to the night of the pilgrim quartet , the celebration came to an end. The slab or the whole stone seems to be no longer traceable.

In 1993 the Schwingeweg in Hamburg-Groß Flottbek was named after Friedrich Schwinge .

Until 2009 there was a permanent exhibition of the Harburg City Museum on Harburg's history, housed in the old Harburg fire station , in which a large model of the heath village by Friedrich Schwinge was shown, which was also exhibited in the Kunstverein in 1910. Further works can be found in the collections of the Schleswig-Holstein State Library , the Hamburger Kunsthalle , the Altona Museum , the Museum of Hamburg History , the Archaeological Museum Hamburg - Stadtmuseum Harburg / Helms-Museum , the International Maritime Museum Hamburg , the Ohlsdorf Cemetery of which a watercolor, nine of the 14 existing ones, hangs in the entrance area above the entrance door of the cemetery museum, the Lüneburg Museum , the Bomann Museum in Celle, the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig, the Friedrich Schwinge collection of the Schwinge relative and Artist Ralf Schwinge (* 1990) in Seevetal and the Volmer Collection Foundation in Wuppertal with 41 Schwinge's sketchbooks from the years 1887 to 1912, three notebooks and, among other things, Schwinge's Schlaraffen-Pass.
