The Art Association Harburger Bahnhof e. V. is located in the premises of the former waiting room of the Harburg long-distance train station. These have existed since 1897 and were originally used as a waiting room for 1st and 2nd class rail travelers. The architect Hubert Stier (1838–1907) used the historicist architectural style , a new combination of various neo-styles, for his design . Architectural references can be found, for example, in the brick-colored brick building of the long-distance train station (a reference back to the “ Hannoversche Architekturschule ” as part of the neo-Gothic brick style ) and the round arches, pilasters and wood paneling of the Kunstverein (a reference to the Neo-Renaissance ). Overall, the premises represent

"Represents the only preserved station waiting hall from the 19th century in the Hamburg area and offers visitors an impressive, free-standing ceiling construction with cassette elements made of wood."

On the initiative of the two artists Udo Dettmann and René Havekost and with the support of the former plant manager of Daimler-Chrysler in Harburg, Prof. Dieter Bobbert, and the former general manager of Deutsche Bank in Hamburg, Dr. Hanns Kippenberger, the waiting room was extensively renovated. The design and implementation came from Gössler Architects (today GKKK Architects, BDA). In 1999 the newly founded Art Association Harburger Bahnhof moved into the premises. Today's exhibition space occupies an area of approx. 356 square meters and has a ceiling height of seven meters.

program

At the beginning, under the artistic direction of Udo Dettmann and Rene Havekost, the focus of the program was on the presentation of painting . Under the artistic direction of

"Wilhelm Figger, Nina Möntmann, Mathias Güntner and Ulla Lohmann [he shifted] increasingly towards presenting developments in contemporary art across media and conveying thematic issues of artistic production."

In addition to the exhibition program, other event formats , such as artist talks , workshops , (lecture) performances , film screenings and concerts , are increasingly being included in the event program. With regard to this repertoire, the program of the Kunstverein brings together and thus pursues various disciplines such as literature , dance and music with the visual arts

"[...] an independent event concept that deliberately puts the experimental art of the 21st century at the center of its activities."
