biography
Schwindrazheim was the son of a Würtemberger and a Lauenburgerin. He grew up in Hamburg and attended the high school and the general trade school here. With a scholarship to the Munich School of Applied Arts, he studied from 1887 to 1889 mainly with Professor Spieß.
He took part in talks with the painter Hermann Haase aimed at reforming the arts and crafts. In 1888 you brought the group of Hamburg plant artists into being. The participating artists created decors based on drawings from nature. This resulted in the Folk Art Association , which was close to the Heimat movement , in 1891 . In its own magazine, the association made motifs available showing rural craftsmen of the recent past, who preferably came from the Hamburg area.
In Hamburg he was the studio manager at the Hamburg art and trade company Hulbe and then worked as a freelance artist and teacher at a private painting school.
From 1907 to 1924 he was a teacher and later director and librarian at the Altona School of Applied Arts . He was a founding member of the Altona artist association founded in 1909 . In 1911 he was awarded the title of professor. He was also an extensive writer.
Schwindrazheim was married to Hilda (nee Möller) and had two daughters; one was the cultural historian Hildamarie Schwindrazheim (1902–1998), who worked as chief curator at the Altona Museum until 1967 .
