The old Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist in Breitbrunn am Ammersee , a district of the municipality of Herrsching am Ammersee in the Upper Bavarian district of Starnberg , was probably built in the 13th century in the Gothic style. Until the consecration of the new Church of the Holy Spirit in 1971, it served as a parish church. The tuff stone building high above the town is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

The first evidence for the church of "Braitenbrun" can be found in documents from the years 1266 and 1268. The choir probably goes back to the church of the 13th century . The nave and the bell tower were probably built in the 16th century. The original portal on the south side was walled up at the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century and replaced by a portal on the west facade, which was integrated into a sign that was probably open to the north and south . The niche on the west side opposite the portal served as an ossuary until the 20th century .

architecture

In the northern corner of the choir stands the bell tower covered with a gable roof. Like the choir, it is built from small tuff blocks, its plastered masonry shows no structure whatsoever. In the bell storey, niches framed by a segmented arch with coupled sound arcades are cut into on three sides .

The single-nave nave consists of two axes and is flat-roofed. The retracted, just closed choir has a barrel vault .

Gallery

Gallery

The wooden gallery was created around 1700. The twelve apostles are depicted on the parapet, with the baptism of Jesus in the middle . Most apostles can be identified by their attributes or by their captions. The pictures were painted over later and exposed again in 1960.

Saint Nicholas, around 1440

Furnishing

  • The main altar was created around 1760/70, the carved figures are older and date from the early 18th century. • In the left side altar there is a figure of St. Stephen from 1855. He is holding the martyr's palm and the stones by which he suffered his martyrdom in his hands. The figure in the extract represents Johannes Nepomuk .
  • The carved figure of the standing Virgin Mary in the right side altar is dated around 1500. It was revised in the baroque era, its crown and the baby Jesus were renewed. St. Francis Xavier is shown in the extract .
  • On a console in the choir stands the figure of St. Nicholas , which is dated to around 1440. He is holding three golden balls in his hand which, according to legend, he gave to three young girls from a poor family to save them from prostitution.
  • The crucifix on the south side of the nave dates from the 18th century.
