Life

Georg Koppmann ran a photographic business in Hamburg. In 1865, Koppmann moved into the photographic studio at Neuer Wall 38, which was used by the portrait painter and photographer Carl von Wieland from 1860 to 1865. The initial cooperation with Mr. Seyfarth ended after a short time. Koppmann first showed photographs of Mecklenburg farms in 1867. From 1870 Koppmann's studio was in Neuer Wall 5 for a period of 25 years. When it suspended orders because of the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in August 1870, he temporarily left Hamburg and looked for work abroad.

At that time, the Hildesheim Senator Hermann Roemer had surely observed on his travels through Germany that large-format photographs with city views could be bought everywhere, especially in Berlin, but not in Hildesheim. In correspondence between Roemer and the Hildesheim publisher Gerstenberg , Roemer personally campaigned for photos of Hildesheim. One of the two gentlemen met Georg Koppmann “by chance”. When Georg Koppmann was working in Braunschweig towards the end of 1870 , he was commissioned to produce a series of pictures about Hildesheim.

The Gerstenberg brothers' publishing house offered a total of 20 views of churches and secular buildings in an advertisement for Christmas 1871 . "Completely new original recordings [...] of a level of excellence in execution, as nothing even remotely similar was previously available", could be purchased as individual photos on cardboard. These photographs continued the customary tradition of buying steel engraving and lithography series of sights as art prints and travel memories.

Presumably he was active in Erfurt, as can be deduced from the release of a corresponding album. He must have been in Cologne too. In 1886 the architect August Hartel published a book about old and newer architecture in Cologne with 28 photographs by Koppmann.

On behalf of the Hamburg Building Deputation, Georg Koppmann had to take photographs of the historic buildings and streets that were to be laid down for the construction of a warehouse district for a free port area . Photographs by Koppmann & Co. were later sold on postcards by the Hamburg publisher Knackstedt & Näther .

In 1900, Koppmann took part in the presentation of the Hamburg cemetery Ohlsdorf at the Paris World Exhibition with 32 photos , where cemetery director Wilhelm Cordes and the Hamburg Senate were awarded a Grand Prix.
