Museum of Hamburg History , one of the foundation's museums

The Hamburg Historical Museums Foundation (SHMH) is a foundation under public law in Hamburg . It was founded on January 1st, 2008 and is responsible for the historical museums of the Free and Hanseatic City. The foundation is under the supervision of the cultural authority , whose respective president also chairs the foundation council.

history

At the end of 1998, the Hamburg Citizenship passed the Hamburg Museum Foundation Act, with which the museums previously directly owned by the state were transferred to independent foundations under public law on January 1, 1999.

In 2006 an expert commission appointed by the then Senator for Culture Karin von Welck presented a 25-point plan for the future of museums. In it, she recommended, among other things, the amalgamation of the Altona Museum , Helms Museum , Museum for Hamburg History and Museum of Labor into a foundation in order to enable better economic and conceptual control of the four buildings. The Senate then introduced a law to amend the Museum Foundation Act in May 2007, which the city council approved in December 2007. The Historical Museums Foundation was established on January 1st, 2008 .

In order to compensate for the ongoing underfunding of the foundation, the then CDU Senate decided in 2010 to close the Altona Museum at the end of the year. After massive public protests, the closure was averted and the director of the Museum of Labor, Kirsten Baumann , who also took over the chairmanship of the SHMH, was charged with developing a concept for the further development of the foundation.

On September 26, 2011, Baumann announced her resignation as chairman of the foundation on December 31, 2011. The reason was an application previously submitted by the SPD parliamentary group for far-reaching changes to the foundation, which Baumann considers to be wrong in terms of its objectives.

In October 2012, Senator for Culture Barbara Kisseler announced that the Helms Museum, the Bergedorfer Museum and the Rieckhaus should be spun off from the SHMH and transferred to other legal forms. The aim of the reform is greater independence and strengthening of the remaining houses.

The foundation has been entrusted with supporting the construction of the German Port Museum , which is to open in the Port of Hamburg between 2023 and 2025 .
