The Speicherstadtmuseum documents the history of construction and use of the historic Speicherstadt in Hamburg . It is located in the room - on the ground floor - of the storage block L from 1888, which was built according to a design by the Hamburg architect Georg Thielen in the neo-Gothic style ( Hannoversche Architekturschule ) and the part used by the Speicherstadt Museum still has the original riveted skeleton structure made of wrought iron disposes. The museum is conveniently located at Am Sandtorkai 36 in the vicinity of HafenCity , the Miniatur Wunderland model railroad , the Hamburg Dungeon and the Spice Museum and is best reached via the U-Bahn line 3 (baumall station).

history

The Speicherstadtmuseum was opened in 1995 as a privately operated branch of the Museum of Labor , which belongs to the Hamburg Historical Museums Foundation . It emerged from the exhibition Speicherstadt - Architectural Monument and Place of Work for 100 Years , which was shown for the first time in the summer of 1988 on the occasion of the centenary of the Speicherstadt and repeated in the summer of 1989 on the occasion of the 800th port birthday. At that time, the Quartiersmanns company Eichholtz & Consorten provided the Museum of Labor with two storage floors in Block R on St. Annenufer 2 on the 3rd and 4th floors free of charge. In 1995 Eichholtz & Cons took over. also the sponsorship for the newly founded Speicherstadtmuseum. The Speicherstadtmuseum has been supported by HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG since 1996 . The Speicherstadtmuseum has been located in Block L of the Speicherstadt, Am Sandtorkai 36, since October 2011.

description

The focus of the permanent exhibition is on the typical goods and the activities of the local people , as the warehouse keepers in the Port of Hamburg still call themselves traditionally, who store goods for third parties - trading houses or processing companies. Using original equipment and historical photos that illustrate the individual work steps, it is shown how high-quality imported goods such as coffee , tea , cocoa , rubber or tobacco used to be stacked, weighed, sampled and sorted on the warehouse floors . In addition, the museum presents the almost extinct profession of the Ewerführer , who transported the goods to the warehouses with a barge - a barge.

Other central topics are the customs connection in 1888 and the free port and the building history of the Speicherstadt , which was built in three construction phases from 1885 to 1927. The original condition of the warehouse district, which suffered severe damage in the Second World War, is documented with historical photos and plans. It also reminds of the Brook Islands, which were demolished for the construction of the Speicherstadt. This archipelago was conveniently located at the interface between the city and the seaports of the time. But it also had around 16,000 inhabitants and around 1880 was almost completely built on with houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, so that a considerable part of the historic old town was sacrificed for the construction of the Speicherstadt and the original population was ruthlessly displaced.

The museum also presents the history of the Hamburg coffee trade, which was mainly concentrated in Block O. In 1887, the world's third commodity futures exchange for green coffee was opened here after New York and Le Havre, so that the Speicherstadt was not only an important warehouse district, but also a leading international trade center. The original inventory of a tasting room for the tasting of tea shows that tea trading companies used to be among the traditional tenants of the storage blocks. The inventory, which includes lidded cups, bowls, sample boxes and spittoons, is still used today for public tea tastings.

Special public events and guided tours

In the Speicherstadt Museum, special public events such as tea tastings or crime readings as well as public tours through the Speicherstadt, which also include a tour of the permanent exhibition, take place regularly. In addition, the museum offers public tours during the school holidays - the “discovery tours” - which are aimed specifically at children aged 6 to 12 accompanied by adults.
