description

The Spice Museum has been located in the historic Speicherstadt since 1993 on an old warehouse floor in Block L. Initially at Sandtorkai 32 above the former Afghan Museum and since the move in 2012 at Sandtorkai 34. The street “Am Sandtorkai” is the dividing line between the historic Speicherstadt with the listed buildings on one side and the new HafenCity buildings on the other.

In the 350 m² exhibition, the subject of spices is presented from many sides. Visitors can touch, smell and taste over 50 spices. The effects and uses of spices are shown and the countries from which the respective spices originate are shown. Over 900 exhibits from the last five centuries give an impression of how spices are grown, harvested, processed and transported.

An important part of the exhibition is the role of spices in history, which is closely linked to the history of Hamburg, the Speicherstadt and seafaring . In addition, numerous special events are offered, such as lectures, cooking demonstrations and literary readings.
