Ole Wittmann

Ole Wittmann (born August 31, 1977 in Henstedt-Ulzburg ) is a German art historian and curator . With his research on tattoos, he is "for the first time comprehensively raising the tattoo into the focus of art-historical consideration."

Life

After graduating from high school, Wittmann trained as a communications manager and worked as a customer consultant in advertising agencies. From 2002 he studied art history, cultural anthropology and sociology in Hamburg. In 2015 he did his doctorate on the human body as an image carrier for tattoos. His dissertation, Tattoos in Art , was published in 2017.

Between 2009 and 2016 he worked as a research assistant at the Arno Schmidt Foundation , and at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg he accompanied the special tattoo exhibition . He also worked as a lecturer at the University of Hamburg .

Wittmann was the curator of the special exhibition Tattoo Legends. Christian Warlich on St. Pauli , which was shown from November 27, 2019 to May 25, 2020 in the Museum of Hamburg History.

From 2015 to 2020 was Wittmann Postdoc - Scholarship of the Hamburg Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Culture. In cooperation with the Museum for Hamburg History , he is leading a research project on the estate of the tattoo artist Christian Warlich . In 2017, Wittmann published and published the first publication of the Warlich estate project in collaboration with the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences and Arts : A multi-award-winning edition of the tattoo template album, Book No. 3 from Warlich's competitor Karl Finke .

Wittmann has been research director and board member of the Institute for German Tattoo History eV (IDTG) since 2018. One of the ongoing research projects that Wittmann is carrying out together with Manfred Kohrs deals with the tattoo artist and piercer Horst Linienbach.
