Kirsten Baumann (* 1963 in Hanover ) is a German art historian and has been the director of the State Museum for Art and Cultural History of the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation at Gottorf Castle since 2013 .

After graduating from high school in 1983, Baumann began an apprenticeship as a carpenter and then studied history and art history in Trier and Bochum from 1985 to 1992 . After positions at the National Gallery of Art in Washington , at the Museum Folkwang in Essen and at the Museum for Art and Cultural History in Dortmund, she has worked as a museum educator at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation since 1997 . In 2001 she was awarded with the work “Wortgefechte. Völkisch and National Socialist Art Criticism 1927–1939 “for Dr. phil. PhD. Since 2005 she has been deputy director of the Bauhaus Foundation, headed the education and mediation department there and supervised the permanent exhibition that opened in 2007 as project manager.

At the end of 2008, Baumann was appointed director of the Museum of Labor by the Board of Trustees of the Hamburg Historical Museums Foundation (SHMH) and took office on April 1, 2009. At the end of 2010, in the dispute over the planned closure of the Altona Museum, she also took over the chairmanship of the SHMH and, on behalf of the Hamburg Senate, developed a concept for the further development of the foundation. When the SPD, which had meanwhile returned to the government, presented a different plan, which instead provided for the spin-off of the Helms Museum , Baumann resigned from the foundation's chairmanship in protest at the end of 2011. Since September 2013 she has been director of the State Museum for Art and Cultural History in the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums Foundation at Gottorf Castle.
