history

At the end of 1842 a commission met to operate the establishment of an art association in the legal form of a stock corporation by subscribing to shares . The first general meeting of shareholders took place on March 23, 1843.

In its statute, the general assembly had defined the purpose of the association as follows: The purpose of the art association is to spread a sense of art and knowledge of art among the residents of the duchies of Schleswig , Holstein and Lauenburg .

The first exhibition took place in Kiel in the former Buchwaldscher Hof . After a donation from the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , a general assembly took place on September 22nd, 1855, to found a picture gallery, which gave an impulse to build an own art gallery. A piece of land in the area of the Kiel Castle was available for this purpose. The Kunsthalle was opened on July 31, 1857 with a speech by archaeologist Peter Wilhelm Forchhammer , member of the board of directors of the Kunstverein, in Dänische Straße. After Schleswig-Holstein received the status of a Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein in 1867 , the Kunstverein lost its rights to the property by giving notice. The last exhibition took place on June 6, 1887. In 1888 the building was demolished in favor of plans for a residence for Prince Heinrich , Grand Admiral of the German fleet. A half-timbered building on the site of the former Anatomie, Dänische Straße 35, served - contrary to expectations - for a long time as a temporary facility ( art barn ) from 1889 .

Although had Lotte Hegewisch (1822-1903) - daughter of the physician Franz Hermann Hegewisch Kiel University awarded already on December 10, 1887 plot in his will -. But the legacy was tied to the clause that an art museum could not be built before and nowhere else. It was only after more than twenty years that Carl Neumann, as chairman of the Kunstverein, was able to inaugurate the new building of the Kunsthalle Kiel on November 15, 1909.

After the First World War , an exhibition by the Schleswig-Holstein Art Cooperative was held in 1919 on the occasion of its existence for 25 years. In 1920 an exhibition of Schleswig-Holstein artists followed, including Christian Rohlfs , Emil Nolde and Ernst Barlach .
