The Schleswig-Holstein Art Cooperative was a Schleswig-Holstein artists' association. It was founded in October 1894 in Kiel .

history

In 1894 the "Schleswig-Holstein artists took their fate into their own hands" and founded the Schleswig-Holstein Art Cooperative as a section of the General German Art Cooperative, which had existed since 1856 . The association was intended as a profession-specific supplement to the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association , which had existed since 1843 , an association of bourgeois art lovers, but due to its traditional conception of art not comparable with the secession in other cities at the same time .

The founding members included the painters Carl Arp , Hans-Peter Feddersen , Georg Burmester and Hans Olde ; Fritz Stoltenberg became the first chairman , followed by Burmester after his resignation. An important goal was to offer the local artists (participation was limited to native Schleswig-Holsteiners) presentation and sales opportunities in jointly organized exhibitions. For this purpose, rooms were rented not only in Kiel, but also in other cities in the state, including Flensburg and Schleswig . The first exhibition took place in the Kiel Kunsthalle in the year it was founded.

From 1902 the members of the art cooperative could regularly take part in the annual art exhibitions in the Munich Glass Palace . Emil Nolde was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Cooperative and took part in five exhibitions between 1903 and 1912. In 1904 he was represented at the annual exhibition in the Flensburg Museum with the paintings “In the robber's room” and “Summer night”. Around 100 artists were constantly members of the art cooperative. However, the members did not see themselves as a group, nor did they pursue a uniform “North German” art style, but many preferred open-air painting .

Members

Further chairmen were among others Friedrich Missfeldt and Heinrich Blunck (from 1929), other well-known members Ernst Barlach , Max Kahlke , Wilhelm Dreesen , Poppe Folkerts , Karl Leipold , Christian Rohlfs and Otto Thämer . Some artists were prone to folk ideas . The member Ludwig Dettmann is considered a pioneer of National Socialism .

After the Second World War , the tradition in the "Association of Visual Artists Schleswig-Holstein" was continued.
