Fritz Stoltenberg (born April 7, 1855 in Kiel , † November 13, 1921 in Schönberg (Holstein) ; full name: Friedrich Martin Andreas Stoltenberg ) was a landscape and marine painter from Schleswig-Holstein .

Career

Stoltenberg was born the son of a captain and began to draw the landscapes of his immediate surroundings as a teenager. He studied from 1872 to 1876 at the art school in Weimar , where he was a student of Theodor Hagen . He then enrolled at the Munich Art Academy and from 1876 to 1882 at the Kassel Academy . During these years he trained as a draftsman and landscape painter and visited Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Algeria and Italy on extensive study trips.

Act

From 1882 Stoltenberg spent the summer months in Ekensund on the Flensburg Fjord , where he belonged to a group of artists who had devoted themselves to outdoor painting (see Ekensund artists' colony ). In the summer of 1884 he traveled to Skagen ( North Jutland ) and joined the circle of Skagen painters that had formed around Peder Severin Krøyer , Michael Ancher and Oscar Björck .

In 1889 he married Anna Scharenberg, a daughter from a wealthy Hamburg family, and settled in Kiel. Now freed from financial constraints, the young painter could work carefree. He used the port of Kiel, city views of Kiel, the fishing village of Ellerbek , the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal and impressions of the fjord as motifs , which he converted into paintings, woodcuts , drawings and illustrations.

With Georg Burmester , Hans Olde and others, he founded the Schleswig-Holstein Art Cooperative in 1894 . In 1896 he published the book "Schleswig-Holstein Meerumschlungen in Wort und Bild" . The large-format volume contained a comprehensive representation of the country's culture. Stoltenberg contributed numerous illustrations for the magnificent volume. In 1900 he handed over the chairmanship of the art cooperative to Georg Burmester, with whom he founded the "Academic Painting and Drawing School" in Kiel in 1905. In 1914 he moved to Schönberg (Holstein) on the Baltic Sea, where he continued to devote himself to outdoor painting. After his death in 1921 he was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery.
