The Warleberger Hof is located at Dänische Strasse 19 in Kiel , Schleswig-Holstein . The listed brick building is the last preserved aristocratic palace in the city and the only preserved private building from the time before 1864 in Kiel's old town. This house has housed the Kiel City Museum since 1970.

history

The preserved vaulted cellar

The building was from 1616 for Christoph Martens, clerk of Duke Friedrich III. by Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf . The building included - not preserved - farm buildings and numerous privileges such as a water connection and brewing rights . The vaulted cellar with the fireplace of the former kitchen from the time it was built has been preserved.

The palace owes its current name to the resident Henning von Thienen auf Warleberg , who acquired it in 1695, and its current appearance to Henning Bendix von Rumohr , who had the house rebuilt from 1765. The sandstone portal, the painted stucco ceilings and wall paintings on the ground floor date from this period. Towards the end of the 17th century there were over 70 such townhouses belonging to noble landlords in Kiel.

The Warleburger Hof remained in aristocratic ownership until it was sold to Kiel University in 1839 for 6,000 Reichsthaler , and at times it was used for anatomy purposes . In 1909 the main facade was set back by five meters when the road was widened. The Warleberger Hof survived the destruction of Kiel in World War II by air raids , which also destroyed the other aristocratic courts and the Kiel Palace .

After the Second World War , the building continued to serve various university purposes. The last major renovations were carried out from 1967 and the house became the permanent seat of the Kiel City Museum from 1970. The history of the city of Kiel is presented on 500 m² of exhibition space and three floors, with changing exhibitions. The Warleberger Hof was renovated from 2009 to 2011. The facade was moved again. During excavation work, beams from a previous building were recovered, which can be dated back to 1278.

The Kiel City and Maritime Museum maintains a depot in the Science Park in Kiel, which offers guided tours at irregular intervals.

Among other things, the original reconstruction of the Vollbehr stationery shop from Kiel- Gaarden can be seen there, which was completely dismantled (inside and outside) including all goods and magazines during the city renovation there in 1986 and rebuilt in the museum depot in 2009.
