Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi is a species of the genus Myrmekiaphila from the subfamily Apomastinae within the family of the Euctenizidae .

description

The species Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi is placed in the fluviatilis group and therefore belongs to the closest relatives of Myrmekiaphila fluviatilis , Myrmekiaphila howelli , Myrmekiaphila jenkinsi , Myrmekiaphila millerae and Myrmekiaphila torreya .

The length of the prosoma varies between 6.25 and 7.76 mm in the females and between 7.19 and 8.00 mm in the males.

Adult males can be distinguished from the other species of the genus with the aid of genital morphological features, in particular on the basis of the structure of the pedipalps tibia with their clearly separated and retrolaterally excavated protrusion and on the basis of the shape of the long embolus and its auxiliary prongs.

The morphological differentiation of females from other species of the genus is difficult. However, the vulva of adult females have a characteristic genital structure with the arrangement and shape of their spermatheks and bulbs.

distribution

Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi has been found for large parts of the US state of Alabama , a single specimen is outside of Alabama, in the northwest of the state of Florida , near the border with Alabama.

Research history

The species was described in 2007 as part of a revision of the genus by Jason E. Bond and Norman I. Platnick to define a male holotype and a female paratype , based on specimens collected in 1998 by J. Powell on the campus of Samford University in the county Jefferson in Alabama . By tracing older found animals, the reports of Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi could be traced back to 1940; since then the animal has been found in the southeastern United States for every decade .

The name Myrmekiaphila was introduced in 1886 by GF Atkinson as a generic name and can be derived from the Greek (Greek: δ μνρμηξ, ηχος = "the ant"; φίλος = "dear, pleasant; loving, friends" or δ φίλος = "friend, Comrade, lover ”). The epithet of the species name was given as a patronymic in honor of Neil Young with the declared intention of honoring his social commitment to peace in the course of his musical career.
