The work word elements of Latin-Greek technical terms in the biological sciences by Fritz Clemens Werner is a reference work for biologists, physicians and veterinarians, which was first published in 1956.

The reference work does not give a historical etymology , but an analysis of the meaning of all the word components that are of current importance for teaching and research . This is especially true for students of biology , medicine and veterinary medicine - especially for those who did not have any Latin or Greek lessons in their school days , but with an abundance of technical terms that are composed of Greek and Latin word components during their studies , be confronted.

history

The work first appeared in 1956 under the title Word elements of Latin-Greek technical terms in biology, zoology and comparative anatomy . It was written by Dr. phil. Fritz Clemens Werner, Prof. em. with a teaching position for zoology at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , based on a collection of materials that he had started decades ago. The 2nd, expanded and improved edition, already under the current title and with a length of 471 pages, was published in 1961 by the Academic Publishing Company Geest & Portig K.-G. in a hardcover edition. The Suhrkamp Taschenbuch Verlag published a first edition of this work in 1972 with a length of 475 pages. The following statements refer to this 1st paperback edition.

Structure / content

On 475 pages, the volume contains an introductory part, the main part ( The smaller word components and the word stems ) and an appendix. The introductory part (pp. 6–24) consists of the forewords to the various editions, an introduction in which the problems of technical terms and their word components are presented, and a section entitled “Signs and Abbreviations”.

The main part (pp. 25–442) is divided into two sections: The Minor Words (pp. 25–77) and The Stems (pp. 79–442). For each word component or stem, its origin, its German translation and its occurrence in different technical terms are shown.

The appendix (pp. 443–475) contains a bibliography (pp. 443–445) and an alphabetical index (pp. 446–475).
