Otto Thämer (born February 1, 1892 in Altona , † November 3, 1975 in Hamburg ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a painter in Hamburg and training at the arts and crafts school in Altona and at the teaching establishment of the arts and crafts museum in Berlin , Thämer studied at the art academies of Berlin , Munich , Rome and Paris . In 1918 he joined the Altona artists 'association , and in 1920 the Hamburg artists' association . This was followed by a painter trip to Italy from 1923 to 1925 . In the 1920s he illustrated a. a. Emergency money .

During the National Socialist regime , Thämer was one of the north German painters of the time: He painted the frescoes of the Uetersen monastery church, built in 1749, and the new land hall of the Adolf-Hitler-Koog built in 1935/36 (since 1945: Dieksanderkoog) in the Dithmarschen district . Of this, only the dyke construction fresco has been preserved today. Thämer also illustrated numerous National Socialist magazines and propaganda publications. At the Great German Art Exhibition in 1942 he was represented with five works. The watercolor Danzig - Krantor was also shown in the exhibition catalog.

In 1944 he began to create new frescoes in the remter of the Mürwik Naval School . Work on it ended in 1955.

Thämer was one of the founding members of the De Warft artist group . His work was strongly influenced by Ferdinand Hodler and Max Klinger . At the exhibition Eine Liebe. Max Klinger and the consequences. In 2007/2008 (in the Museum der Bildenden Künste Leipzig and the Hamburger Kunsthalle ) works by Thämers were also shown. Works by Thämer are today u. a. in the Kieler Kunsthalle and in Kiel Town Hall; Paintings in the Mürwik Naval School.
