Kahlke gave his academic training little importance. The meeting with the Tyrolean painter Albin Egger-Lienz , formerly a teacher in Weimar, was important for him . A portrait of his grandfather qualified him for admission to the Schleswig-Holstein Art Cooperative as early as 1912 . He was also a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association .

During the First World War, Kahlke was wounded and treated for months in various hospitals. From the end of the war until his untimely death in 1928, he was based in Glückstadt. In 1925 he was accepted as a member of the Altona artist association . In 1926 he joined the newly founded artist group De Warft .

His grave is in the Glückstadt cemetery.
