Rudolph Karstadt
Rudolph Karstadt (born February 16, 1856 in Grevesmühlen , † December 15, 1944 in Schwerin ) was a German department store entrepreneur
Life
Rudolph Karstadt was born the son of master dyer Christian Karstadt and his wife Dorothea. He had three sisters and five brothers.
The trained retail salesman Rudolph Karstadt opened his first "Manufactur, Confections and Cloth Store" on May 14, 1881 at Krämerstrasse 4 in Wismar , from which the later Karstadt AG emerged . His brother Ernst, who was two years older than him, also ran small department stores ( e.g. Dömitz and Wandsbek ), which Rudolph bought from his indebted brother in 1900. As early as 1920 he owned over 30 stores across Germany. Karstadt maximized its profits by processing the purchase of goods centrally and purchasing goods directly from the manufacturers without any intermediaries. Up until now, price negotiations had been the norm; Karstadt introduced fixed prices in its stores instead .
After Rudolph Karstadt had lost all of his assets during the Great Depression in 1931/32, he left the company and moved back to Schwerin.
