The Hamburg address books are a historical directory of people who lived or worked in Hamburg .

history

The forerunners of the Hamburg address book were the writings "Jetzt belebtes Hamburg ..." (first published in 1712) and the "Hamburger Kaufmannsalmanach" (published from 1782 to 1789). Johann Heinrich Hermann (1750–1821) was the editor of the Hamburg address book, first published in 1787, which also appeared under different names in the early years. At first it was a little extensive directory containing bank accounts and addresses of Hamburg merchants. In the following years a street directory sorted by name and house number was added and developed into a reference work in several volumes. The documents from the 19th century also contain extensive information on private and public institutions as well as museums, libraries and associations.

The Hamburg address books were published by Hermann's Erben until 1939 and, after its dissolution, by Dumrath & Fassnacht until 1966 . Today they are an important source of the social history of the Hanseatic city .
