Hans Schröder came from a wealthy farming family of the Kremper Marsch . After attending school in Glückstadt , he studied law and history at the universities of Jena and Kiel . He completed his law studies in 1823 with the state examination. In 1828 he cataloged the more than 10,000 volumes of the library of the writer Johann Gottwerth Müller in Itzehoe. At the University of Kiel , he was in 1831 for Dr. phil. PhD . After the death of his parents, he was the first-born to run his parents' farm from 1837 to 1843, but then sold it in order to live with his wife in Altona and pursue his lexicographical interests exclusively. His adaptations of north German biographies are still an important source for regional historians in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein . He died shortly before the completion of the third volume of the Lexicon of Hamburg writers . This perhaps most important work by Schröder was only completed by his successors with the publication of the eighth volume in 1883.

He bequeathed his extensive private library of 8,000 volumes to three institutions: First, the Hamburg City Library was allowed to take around 4,000 works that it did not own. The rest was shared between his old grammar school in Glückstadt and the Christianeum grammar school in Altona.
