Ctenus monaghani is a comb spider species discoveredby Peter Jäger from the Senckenberg Research Institute on a researchtripin 2012 in Laos in the province of Khammuan . The species, of which only a single male is known, was described in 2013. Therefore nothing is known of the exact distribution area and the way of life.

features

It is a medium-sized species of spider belonging to the comb spider family. The holotype male is 10 millimeters long. The spider has a maroon to olive green basic color. The different patterns can only be seen indistinctly. On the upper side of the prosoma (cephalothorax) they have a medially located band with a zigzag border of lighter, dense hair that runs from the eyes towards the abdomen. On the prosoma's side they have a pattern of round dots. The sternum on the underside of the prosoma as well as the underside of the coxes (a leg link) are yellowish-brown in color and have no pattern. The labium (lower lips) and the Gnathocoxae are darker in color. The bite claws are the same color as the cephalothorax. The two rear pairs of legs are darker in color than the two front and the buttons. The abdomen (opisthosoma) has a fine band and pairs of dark spots on the back half. On the underside of the abdomen, the spiders have spots of whitish hair. The anterior lateral spinnerets are dark and the central and posterior spinnerets are lighter in color.

designation

The species name monaghani was chosen in honor of the actor Dominic Monaghan , who plays the character of the hobbit Meriadoc Brandybuck in the trilogy The Lord of the Rings . He was present on the expedition in Laos to shoot an episode of the television documentary series Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan , which is about little-noticed or even unpopular, but nonetheless important living things for nature's household.
