Peter Jäger (arachnologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Jäger (* 1968) is a German arachnologist .

Life

Peter Jäger grew up in Paderborn. In 2000 he received his doctorate in biology at the Institute of Zoology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz on the diversity of the giant crab spiders (Sparassoidea) in the Himalayas . In 2002 he was appointed full-time head of the arachnology section of the terrestrial zoology department at the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum in Frankfurt , after Manfred Grasshoff , actually the Marine Evertebrate I section, managed the arachnological collection between 1969 and 2002 . There he also acts as curator of the largest arachnological collection in Germany with over 500,000 copies and also looks after the “ gray literature collection” of the Arachnological Society (over 200 works).

So far he has described over 300 new species, most of which he collected on research trips to Southeast Asia . He received special media attention in 2001 when he described the largest known spider, Heteropoda maxima from Laos with a leg span of up to 30 cm. The naming of some species in 2008 also caused greater media reception: he named species from the genus Heteropoda after David Bowie , Nina Hagen and Udo Lindenberg, among others . His research focuses on the taxonomy , systematics , zoogeography and evolution of giant crab spiders and the functional morphology of copulatory organs.

Peter Jäger is the correspondent of the International Society of Arachnology for Germany and was a board member of the society from 2004 to 2010. He was also Chairman of the Board of the Arachnological Society (2004–2010) and a member of the “ Spider of the Year ” board of trustees (2000–2009).
