The Lüneburg Museum deals with the cultural landscape of the Lower Saxony Hanseatic City of Lüneburg and its surroundings. Natural history , cultural history and archeology exhibits are presented . The focus is on the 15th and 16th centuries .

Museum history

Construction of the first museum for the Principality of Lüneburg according to plans by the architects August Friedrich Heithaus and Ferdinand Munzenberger began in 1889 and opened in 1891. A first extension was added in 1908, followed by a second in 1913. In 1945, at the end of World War II , the building was bombed and temporarily reopened in 1948. The south wing was rebuilt from 1968 to 1970.

A merger of the Museum for the Principality of Lüneburg, the Lüneburg Nature Museum and the Lüneburg City Archeology in a new building was considered from 2008, including the old part of the Principality Museum. In 2012 the foundation stone was laid for this house, which opened in 2015 under the name "Museum Lüneburg".

The foyer, the cash register and a café are located on the ground floor of the building.

Room 1 on the ground floor of the museum has the motto "Layers and Push". It shows how wind, water and ice create our landscape.

The exhibition rooms 2 to 5 are located on the upper floor. In room 2, under the motto “Grow and Create”, the development of the natural and cultural landscape is shown.

Room 3 “Founding and Building” reports on the founding of the city, the city's resources and the development of the cityscape.

Room 4 has the motto “rule and challenge”. Princes, dukes and influential families shaped the fortunes of the city.

In room 5 “Belief and Knowledge” is the motto. It is the time of the Enlightenment and Reformation. Book printing and other media spread the newly acquired knowledge.

The exhibition rooms 6 and 7 are again on the ground floor. Room 6 “Finding and Researching”. The period from the 13th to the 17th century can be seen here.

The motto of room 7 is “Remembering and Preserving”. Recent history, the Nazi era and the memory of historical events are on display here.
