Skoobe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Skoobe (the word e-books read backwards) is a service launched in 2012 that offers a flat rate for e-books, i. H. you can read unlimited books for a fixed monthly price. According to the company's own information, the offer includes more than 300,000 books from 4,800 German-language publishers, as well as thousands of titles in English and around 10,000 in Spanish. According to older press articles, books from the Spiegel bestseller list for fiction were only “rarely” available on Skoobe, but now there is a separate category with bestseller titles.

The company behind the offer, Skoobe GmbH , based in Munich , was founded in August 2010.

history

Skoobe was 2010 by the Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group , the Random House and Bertelsmann provider Arvato founded. The managing directors were initially Christian Damke, who took over the commercial management of the company, and Henning Peters, who took care of the technical management. Constance Landsberg was managing director from 2014 to 2018, and Julian Manzel has been managing director since autumn 2018. In October 2018 it was announced that the book chain Thalia would become a partner in Skoobe through a capital increase with a 50 percent stake .

technology

Skoobe can be used with the following devices: iPad , iPhone , iPod touch (at least iOS 5.0 or newer), Android smartphones and tablets (at least Android 2.3 or newer) and the Kindle Fire . Skoobe cannot be used on many e-book readers because they do not allow apps to be installed. However, the Skoobe app can be installed and used on open Android-based e-book readers, including, for example, the InkBOOK Prime , the InkBOOK Classic 2 , the Energy Sistem Reader or the Icarus Illumina series (these four devices are currently on the Skoobe website recommended to use their program).
