Gustav Ferdinand Thaulow (born July 6, 1817 in Schleswig ; † March 11, 1883 in Kiel ) was a German professor of philosophy , art collector and founder of the Thaulow Museum in Kiel .

family

Thaulow came from the Norwegian family Thaulow: His parents were the Apenrader administrative administrator Johan Frederik Thaulow (1768-1833) and his wife Caroline Henriette Tugendreich Looft (1777-1852). After the father's death, the mother and her children went to Norway, which had belonged to the entire Danish state until the Peace of Kiel on January 14, 1814 . Gustav Ferdinand Thaulows, who stayed in Schleswig, had three brothers:

  • Heinrich Arnold Thaulow (1808-1894), doctor
  • Moritz Christian Julius Thaulow (1812–1850), chemist
  • Harald Conrad Thaulow (1815–1881), pharmacist and chemist, father of the painter Frits Thaulow .

Life

In Schleswig Thaulow attended the cathedral school . From 1837 he studied theology and philosophy at the Universities of Kiel and Berlin . Because he did not have the means to continue his studies, he became tutor to the von Bülow family at Gut Bothkamp and then obtained his doctorate in 1842. phil. in Kiel. In 1843 he completed his habilitation at this university as a private lecturer in philosophy and preferably in education. In 1846 he became an associate professor of philosophy and in 1854 a full professor of philosophy and education, most recently he was also a lecturer at the Naval Academy and Knight of the Order of the Crowns III. Class, 1878 Privy Councilor.

In philosophy, Thaulow belonged to the Hegelian school . In 1849 he founded the Schleswig-Holstein school newspaper. He started a collection of woodcut works in his home. In 1876 he donated this collection to the province of Schleswig-Holstein , which then built the Thaulow Museum named after him .

When the collection of Schleswig-Holstein antiquities was transferred to Copenhagen when it separated from Denmark , he campaigned for this collection to be returned and taken to the Kiel Museum of Antiquities. After Professor Fricke left the University of Leipzig, he took over the directorate of the Schleswig-Holstein main association of the Gustav Adolph Foundation for sixteen years . In Kiel, Thaulow was a member of the Alma Masonic Lodge on the Baltic Sea .

He worked as a lecturer at the Marine Academy in Kiel for ten years. Its director showed him an extraordinarily keen interest in the navy and a great enthusiasm for his teaching post.
